Within days, usage had spread peer-to-peer across your operation. By the time your COO heard about it, seven different people were already using it daily. When you finally map what's running, you typically discover 12 unauthorised tools, not just ChatGPT.

This wasn't unique to AI. We've seen this pattern before.
In 2013, Dropbox revealed that 97% of Fortune 500 companies had employees using its software—mostly through unauthorised shadow IT accounts. IT departments tried to ban it. The bans failed. Adoption continued. Enterprises eventually capitulated and bought licenses to govern what they couldn't stop.

The difference with AI: Dropbox held files. ChatGPT processes data—and learns from it. The governance lag is more expensive this time. When IT discovered Dropbox, they could audit what was stored. This pattern repeats. Senior strategist, eight years' experience. Pre-AI: four hours to draft a positioning document. Post-AI: 75 minutes. Output quality identical—sometimes better.
Her manager thinks she's become exceptional. She has. But not through skill development alone. Through AI augmentation nobody knows about.
The immediate value created its own adoption pressure. Team members who used AI finished work faster. Team members who didn't use AI fell behind. The productivity gap became visible quickly.
